# Is buying your name as a domain worth it?

> For around the price of a lunch a year, yourname.com gives you an address that’s yours for as long as you keep it. Here’s what it actually gets you, what it costs, and when it can wait.

**Short answer:** For most people building a personal brand, yes. A .com usually costs around $10 to $20 a year, and it gives you a link that never has to change, a professional email address (you@yourname.com), and the page that comes up when someone searches your name. It can wait if you aren’t ready to use it, but names get taken, so it’s worth checking yours now.

## What a personal domain gets you

- **A link that never changes.** Apps change their rules, bios get capped, accounts get banned. yourname.com stays yours, and you can point it at whatever you use next.

- **A professional email address.** you@yourname.com is what brands, clients and recruiters take seriously, and it stays the same if you change email providers.

- **Your name in search.** A site at your own domain is a strong candidate for the first result when someone searches your name.

- **One address everywhere.** Your bios, business card, email signature and QR code all carry the same name.

## What it costs

A .com is typically around $10 to $20 a year. Watch for a cheap first year followed by a much higher renewal, and for names a seller has marked as premium, which can cost hundreds or more. Email at the domain and a website on it are separate costs with most providers; some services, Bounley Premium among them, put the domain, email and site together.

## When it can wait

- **You haven’t settled on the name you’ll use.** Decide first; see [choosing a domain name](https://bounley.com/guides/personal-brand-domain-name).

- **You won’t use it yet.** A domain pointing nowhere does nothing. That said, if yourname.com is free today, it may not be next year, and holding it costs little.

## If yourname.com is taken

Try a short variation (your name plus what you do, or “hq”), or another ending such as .co or .me. The [domain name ideas tool](https://bounley.com/tools/domain-name-ideas) checks which are free and shows the matching email addresses.

## Put it to work

A domain earns its keep once it shows your site and carries your email. Bounley, the platform built for personal brands, does both: your site on your own domain and an email address at it, with your business card, QR code and email signature made from the same site (Premium, by invitation during the beta). Your site at bounley.me/yourname is free in the meantime. Then [put it in every bio](https://bounley.com/guides/own-domain-link-in-bio).

## Questions

### Should I buy my name as a domain?

If you’re building a personal brand or a career under your own name, yes: it’s cheap, it’s the base for a professional email, and names get taken.

### Is .com better than other endings?

.com is the one people type by default, so it’s best when it’s free. .co, .me or a job-specific ending like .studio work well when it isn’t; just say the full address clearly.

### Do I have to keep paying for it?

Yes, domains renew every year (or for several years at once). Turn on auto-renew so it never lapses; an expired domain can be bought by someone else.
